Stone circles have always felt very special in my life. As a child my parents took me to Stonehenge and Avebury, but it wasn’t until I revisited them as an adult that I experienced a little of their true power and beauty. I was in the company of a very special woman from the First Nations of America (a detailed account can be found in ‘To Be Human is an Honour’)
As a teenager I was drawn to mystery and legends associated with ancient sites in our area. Alderley Edge and Arbor Low being two favourites, local to my childhood home. The books of Alan Garner helped to foster the mystery and magic of the former.
As an adult, I think my favourite has become Castlerigg in the northern Lake District. Every time I visit, I experience something different… some quite bizarre but each one special in its own way. I’ve noticed that my perception of each site varies, depending on the people who accompany me.
There are many sites in Anglesey that fill me with peace and tranquil beauty, connecting to an ancient past with silent mystery. Part of the attraction is the unknown, that I can let my imagination run wild, speculating on their origins and imagining their purpose.
The latest book in the series Tree Spirits in Time, draws on this connection to these wonderful and ancient monuments. Stones in Time takes the reader to the period when the last phase of Stonehenge has just been completed and imagines the role played by stone circles in the daily and ceremonial lives of the people who built them. The latest archaeological theories are woven in with the author’s imagination, creating a compelling tale of mystery, magic and adventure.
